Butner, NC. July 25, 2025. - The South Granville Water and Sewer Authority recognizes recent concerns raised regarding water clarity and seasonal odor for some residents in Granville County. While SGWASA’s water meets or exceeds all state and federal water quality guidelines, aesthetic concerns may still be present.

SGWASA has received no water quality violations since 2017, a reflection of our team’s commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Addressing Aesthetic Concerns

While SGWASA’s water is safe to drink by all current regulatory health standards, we understand that water with discoloration or odor can raise questions. These aesthetic issues, often caused by naturally occurring minerals such as iron and manganese, are not considered harmful by the EPA.

However, our team is actively addressing these concerns through ongoing infrastructure improvements, flushing processes, quality maintenance programs, as well as enhanced testing and monitoring protocols.

Upgrades in Progress

Engineering design is currently underway to upgrade several critical components of the water treatment system, a timely and necessary step to support long-term service reliability. These upgrades include new infrastructure to reduce PFAS in the drinking water to meet the EPA requirements, and a filter media replacement project to increase water quality. The PFAS reduction project is supported by federal, state, and local  funding. SGWASA’s goal is to improve water quality, reduce sediment buildup, and modernize the delivery system for our customers.

Notice a Water Issue?

If you are experiencing discoloration, odor, or other water quality concerns, we encourage you to complete the Water Quality Questionnaire that you can find on the SGWASA homepage. Please keep in mind that some water quality issues can originate from plumbing on private property rather than public infrastructure.

Once you complete the Water Quality Questionnaire, a SGWASA utility team member will investigate your concern and perform an inspection. These inspections occur during normal business operations.

Staying Connected

We are committed to transparency and proactive communication. Residents are encouraged to subscribe for alerts at SGWASA.org/alerts to remain informed about system updates, construction notices, and service improvements.

Our team hears your concerns. We share your expectations, and we are actively working to deliver the highest quality service possible to our community.
