The South Granville Water and Sewer Authority (SGWASA) is actively executing several strategic projects aimed at strengthening water quality and infrastructure throughout Granville County. These initiatives are designed not only to address longstanding concerns within the community but also to confront emerging environmental challenges, chief among them, the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Through thoughtful planning, grant acquisition, and collaboration with expert engineering partners, the current suite of projects exemplifies SGWASA’s commitment to providing sustainable, reliable water and sewer infrastructure for customers through scientific rigor, qualified advisement, and proactive investment.
Understanding the Work Behind the Water
Infrastructure improvements can sometimes require temporary changes in service, including routine system flushing. Flushing is a necessary and industry-standard process that helps ensure water continues to meet quality standards throughout the distribution system.
Customers who notice discoloration, unusual odors, or changes in taste are encouraged to report water quality concerns directly to SGWASA. Every submission, whether through our online questionnaire or a direct service request, is treated with the utmost seriousness and is investigated until a solution is reached or, where necessary, referred to the appropriate agency if the issue lies outside SGWASA’s service jurisdiction.

Current Projects Advancing Water Quality
The following key efforts represent SGWASA’s commitment to water system resilience and quality advancement:
PFAS Reduction – Grant-Funded Technology Evaluation
A $500,000 NCDEQ grant was secured for the evaluation of PFAS treatment technologies. This work, led by CDM Smith, will inform the design of a resilient treatment system tailored to local conditions.
PFAS Reduction – Design and Construction Phase
An additional $5 million NCDEQ grant was secured for the design and construction of a permanent PFAS removal system.
Water Filter Media Inspection
A comprehensive inspection uncovered the need for filter media and nozzle replacement, critical steps to enhance treatment performance.
Water Filter Media Replacement – Design and Construction
With Hazen leading the initiative, SGWASA is undertaking full design, permitting, and construction oversight for media replacement, with an estimated cost of $700,000.
Water Valve Replacement at the Water Treatment Plant
Engineering design is underway to replace a leaking valve, with construction anticipated later this summer.
Lake Rogers Booster Pump Improvements
Completed in December 2024, this project modernized chlorine dosing infrastructure to improve system-wide disinfection.
System-Wide Water Quality Improvement Assessments
A $227,340 investment is driving hydraulic modeling, hydrant flushing optimization, booster pump evaluation, and control system upgrades.
Water Infrastructure Assessment – AIA Grant Project
This $150,000 grant-funded study will help prioritize long-term capital improvements based on current system conditions.
City of Creedmoor Mass Water Meter Upgrade
A $1 million initiative to replace 2,000 meters with automated meter reading (AMR/AMI) technology will yield real-time data and improved billing accuracy.
Water Treatment Master Plan – AIA Grant Funded
A forward-looking long-term planning effort, supported by a $150,000 grant, will guide investment and infrastructure decisions through 2026.
Water quality is not merely a regulatory requirement; for SGWASA, it is a daily priority and a long-term promise to customers.
