Butner, NC. March 30, 2026 - Active utility installation, structural progress, and coordination efforts supporting the next phase of work continue for the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project.
In Construction Package 1, recent progress included completion of the valve and electrical building curb wall, installation of concrete masonry unit walls, installation of the force main vault and force main piping at the Joe Peed Pump Station. CP#1 work is expected to remain focused on completing masonry activities at the valve and electrical building, continuing yard piping and miscellaneous pad work at Joe Peed, beginning additional pad work at East Middleton, and advancing electrical and duct bank activities.
In Construction Package 2, the last thirty days included installation of the temporary bypass piping system, pipe and manhole installation from the outfall area up to D Street, and rock blasting along Eighth Street until a stop work order from Enbridge affected that portion of the alignment. The contractor team also continued advancing the micro tunnel re-submittal package as coordination efforts moved forward.
Over the next thirty days, Construction Package 2 is expected to center on relocation of blasting operations to the micro tunnel receiving pit, continued installation of pipe and manholes through D Street toward Eighth Street, and testing of the new pipe so the temporary bypass system can eventually be removed. At the same time, project partners noted that the current Enbridge stop work order is impeding progress, making utility coordination a key factor in maintaining momentum.
SGWASA and its project partners continue moving critical wastewater infrastructure improvements forward across the I-85 corridor.
