Winter Weather : System Monitoring and Support

Winter weather can impact water and sewer systems in different ways, from service line freezes and main breaks to equipment alarms and changing system demand. SGWASA teams are actively monitoring conditions and continuing repairs as needed, with field and operational staff positioned to support essential service.
During routine system monitoring, SGWASA detected an equipment alarm associated with the Belltown Road Water Tower. Crews responded and determined the tower-level transducer froze. Although the transducer is equipped with heat tape and insulation, the freezing condition caused averse readings. As a result, the system interpreted the tank level improperly and adjusted the levels.
To stabilize operations, SGWASA has placed the Belltown tower pumps in the 'off' position and is managing tank level through manual pumping, for now.
The Town of Stem helps feed the Belltown system, and system conditions contributed to lower levels in Stem, NC while Belltown pumping was placed on hold to prevent over-pumping based on false readings.
The Belltown tower has been refilled and stabilized. Plans are in motion to inspect and verify the Belltown transducer and confirm proper operation. Belltown pumps will remain off while SGWASA continues manual pumping until the issue is resolved.
If you notice pressure concerns or have a water or sewer-related emergency during winter weather, please use our emergency reporting resources.
