SGWASA Reports Routine Test Result: No Public Health Impact

Butner, NC. March 3, 2026 - As part of routine quarterly monitoring required by the State of North Carolina, SGWASA conducted scheduled aquatic toxicity testing on February 10th and 12th, 2026 through a contracted laboratory.

The contracted lab reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) that the test did not meet expected organism performance under laboratory conditions. SGWASA was notified of the reported result on February 23, 2026.

All other wastewater compliance testing performed during the same week was fully compliant. Based on operational data and in-house sampling, SGWASA staff believes the laboratory’s reported values may be inaccurate and inconsistent with other plant indicators. However, because the reported values submitted to NCDEQ exceeded allowable limits, NCDEQ is required to issue a Notice of Violation (NOV).

This matter does not indicate a public health risk, does not involve SGWASA’s drinking water system (which remains fully compliant), and has no immediate effect on the Falls Lake Rules or SGWASA’s obligations under the Falls Lake Nutrient Management Strategy.
