Butner, NC. March 3, 2026 - On March 2, 2026, at approximately 11:30 am, South Granville Water and Sewer Authority teams responded to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) in the vicinity of 22nd Street in Butner, NC. The overflow originated from Manhole #1374 due to a blockage caused by non-flushable wipes, plastic, and other debris.

Crews cleared the blockage and stopped the overflow in approximately one hour. The estimated discharge was around 600 gallons to the ground, with a small amount, less than 10 gallons, reaching surface waters at a nearby, unnamed creek; the flow was contained and did not travel more than 50 feet into the creek.

SGWASA implemented containment and cleanup actions, including damming the creek, using a pump truck to drain the affected area, removing debris and impacted material, and stabilizing the site with lime, straw, and grass seed; collected material was disposed at the wastewater treatment plant and flow was directed back into the system for treatment.

NCDEQ was notified by phone within 24 hours, reported March 3, 2026, at approximately 11:00 am; and required follow-up reporting will be completed. SGWASA reminds customers that wipes (including “flushable” wipes), plastics, and other non-flushable items should be placed in the trash to help prevent blockages; if wastewater is observed, avoid contact and report concerns via sgwasa.org/emergency.
