Butner, NC. September 10, 2025 - At SGWASA, public safety, and reliable service go hand in hand. One important process that helps us ensure both, is fire flow testing; also known as hydrant flow testing.
Fire flow testing is a procedure used to measure the amount of water that can be delivered through fire hydrants. By evaluating flow and pressure, SGWASA can confirm that the water supply available in our
system is adequate for firefighting purposes and meets the set standards.
This testing not only supports emergency preparedness but also provides valuable data to engineers, developers, and planners. The results help identify system improvements, guide infrastructure upgrades, and confirm that new developments have the necessary water supply for fire protection.

While customers may occasionally notice crews testing hydrants, these activities are an essential step in keeping our community safe. The temporary water movement may cause brief discoloration, but the water remains safe to use. Running the tap for a short time typically clears the line.
