Butner, NC. January 26, 2026 - Construction continues across both Construction Package 1 and Construction Package 2 of the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project, with field teams advancing critical pump station and pipeline work while preparing for the next phase of activities planned over the next 30 days. This update summarizes key progress items discussed in CP1 Progress Meeting #9 and CP2 Progress Meeting #1, including upcoming utility installations, yard piping, vault setting, manhole staking, bypass pumping setup, and the start of trenchless work beneath Interstate 85.

Construction Package 1 (CP1) Progress Meeting #9

Work will continue on the incoming sewer line feeding the pump station site. Over the next month, planned work includes installing electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems in and under the valve and electrical building before preparing for the concrete slab, continuing yard piping, setting the flow meter vaults, and extending the gravity sewer line toward the existing pump station. The schedule remains driven by the incoming and gravity-line work, with several key equipment items and related approvals being closely monitored to maintain progress.

Construction Package 2 (CP2) Progress Meeting #1

Construction Package 2 has moved through early field activities, including clearing, erosion control, test drilling, and initial pipe deliveries, with the next work window centered on manhole staking, temporary bypass pumping setup, excavation for pipeline installation, and initiation of the micro tunnel crossing beneath I-85. Early construction activities are underway, including clearing, erosion control installation, test drilling, and initial deliveries of pipe staged along the alignment.

The next month of work will focus on completing pre-blast surveys and manhole staking, setting up temporary bypass pumping so service can continue during construction, beginning excavation for pipeline installation, and starting the trenchless microtunnel crossing beneath Interstate 85.

A sewer-line camera inspection is planned within the next two weeks to identify incoming service connections, and field verification has already identified downstream connections that differ from earlier assumptions and will be addressed as work advances.

Coordination with nearby residents remains active, with concerns resolved to date, and crews plan to protect stored materials near roadways ahead of winter conditions.

Work Planned for the next 30 days:

  • Install electrical, plumbing, and mechanical in & under at Joe Peed valve and electrical building & prep for slab pour.

  • Begin FM piping work in yard at JP. Prepare to set flow meter vault.

  • Begin electrical in & under at East Middleton.

  • Continue installation of FM piping at East Middleton & set flow meter vault.

  • Wilkerson should complete the influent line at Joe Peed & continue the gravity line towards the existing Joe Peed Pump Station.

To maintain momentum after winter weather impacts, work will also be conducted on Saturday to help make up lost time.

Contractors will begin pre-blast surveys this week in the D Street and Eight Street vicinities; these surveys are a standard step completed ahead of any potential rock blasting to document existing property conditions and support safety planning.
