On February 25, 2026, SGWASA recognized Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day, a statewide observance proclaimed by Governor Josh Stein to honor the men and women whose work protects public health and the environment every day.
This recognition is prelude leading into early March, with increased community education programs and recognition by utilities and industry partners to observe Water Professionals Day on March 2, 2026.

SGWASA’s wastewater operations depend on teams with specialized technical skills and a constant readiness mindset. Their responsibilities often include:
Collection system operations and maintenance: inspecting and maintaining gravity mains, force mains, manholes, and related assets to reduce overflows, blockages, and service disruptions.
Lift station and pump reliability: monitoring stations, maintaining pumps and controls, and responding to alarms to keep flow moving safely through the system.
Treatment process oversight: operating treatment facilities to remove pollutants and protect receiving waters—balancing flow, biology, and mechanical systems to maintain stable performance.
Laboratory and monitoring activities: collecting and analyzing samples that support process control and compliance reporting, and providing data that informs operational decisions.
Regulatory compliance and documentation: maintaining performance within permit requirements, completing operational reporting, and supporting audits and inspections.
After-hours response and safety: responding to urgent issues and system events with safety-first procedures, coordination, and careful field execution.
In North Carolina, this day has been formally recognized statewide through a gubernatorial proclamation, underscoring the essential nature of the profession and the impact it has across communities.
SGWASA extends sincere appreciation to our professionals for their steadfast commitment and dedicated service to our community.
