Butner, NC. May 20, 2025 - Construction for the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project officially began on April 1, 2025. Since breaking ground, the project team has made significant progress toward meeting key milestones and contractual expectations.
At the May 20th progress meeting, CDM Smith representative Bill Mason led with team updates and formally introduced Greg Hoch as the new Resident Project Representative (RPR) for Construction Package 1 (CP1) of the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project. Jackie Jackson, the initial RPR for CP1, will transition to support Construction Package 2 (CP2) as the RPR once that phase begins.
Bid Process and Participation
The bidding window for CP2 is nearing closure. Bid openings are scheduled for this Thursday, following the Mandatory Pre-Bid Meeting held on May 1. Only construction professionals who attended that meeting are eligible to submit bids.
Construction Progress and Site Activity
Recent activities on the CP1 site include:
•Site clearing completed
•Initial blasting to be completed by next week
•Pipeline blasting scheduled to follow
•Delivery and placement of construction trailers
Teams are now working to establish water and electrical access for the Joe Peed construction site. While permanent electrical service is expected to take approximately two months, SGWASA Executive Director Scott N. Schroyer suggested pursuing temporary electric options or generators to expedite the setup.
Project managers explored the option to gain permitting for a temporary water line to the construction trailers. It was determined that the extended permitting effort would impact the project schedule, a temporary water source will be available by way of a temporary water tank.
Site Access, Safety & Resident Communication
Safety, security, and site access were central themes throughout the meeting. New signage has been installed to assist residents and travelers navigating near the construction zones. Resident inquiries related to noise, landscaping impacts, and drainage concerns were acknowledged, with efforts underway to provide timely and transparent responses.
Technical Updates and Coordination
•Sub-grade testing with F&R is not yet required but has been arranged in preparation for lift station development.
•GSI calculations and summaries are being updated in partnership with the same firm that supported I-40 project efforts.
•Additional support was requested from Haren to expedite submittal reviews for project materials.
•Pipe deliveries and storage are ongoing, with materials organized into designated piles.
CDM Smith is currently finalizing project payment applications and the schedule of values. Key considerations include unit price mobilization and adherence to project plans. Record drawing documentation is being maintained meticulously.
Upcoming Work and Engineering Targets:
•Joe Peed excavation will continue throughout June.
•E. Middleton site remediation is under engineering review.
•Pending change orders are being reviewed to identify efficiencies.
•Drilling will continue at the E. Middleton segment, with minimal rock anticipated.
