I-85 SSI Project
The South Granville Water and Sewer Authority partnered with engineering experts CDM Smith to conduct the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project.
This project will replace aging materials to maintain an infrastructure that meets Granville County’s present and forthcoming capacity demands.
Two Week Look Ahead

The next phase of I-85 SSI construction brings active sewer installation, tunneling, blasting preparation, and traffic changes to several project areas. Along Joe Peed Road, one crew has demobilized from the former lift station area while a plan is developed for disposal of contaminated soil. The crew is expected to return when the remaining gravity sewer work is available. A second crew is continuing installation of the 20-inch force main from Joe Peed.
Motorists traveling near the new Joe Peed pump station should expect periodic flagging and lane closures this week as force main construction moves forward. Lane closures are also anticipated next week as this work progresses along Joe Peed Road.
In the CP-2 area, Park is continuing pipe installation on A Street and preparing C Street for Carolina Drilling by excavating the air gap needed for upcoming blasting operations. Young Construction is advancing the I-85 microtunnel casing and continuing tunneling operations. Controlled blasting is planned on C Street.
Customers and motorists should be aware of the following expected impacts.
Joe Peed Road: Periodic flagging and lane closures near the new Joe Peed pump station
A Street: Full closure
8th Street: Full closure
C Street: Full closure
No partial road closures are currently identified within the CP-2 work plan.
Construction schedules and traffic controls may be adjusted as field conditions require. Motorists are encouraged to follow posted signage, allow additional travel time, and use caution near crews and equipment.
SGWASA appreciates the community’s continued patience and cooperation as crews advance these wastewater infrastructure improvements.
Please be advised that blasting and construction activities may cause noise near the project area. Other work may begin as early as 7:00 AM and end at 10:00 PM, while jack-and-bore tunneling near the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing will continue 24 hours a day until complete. Nearby customers may hear tunneling noise overnight. Deliveries, blasting and excavation may also affect traffic on multiple streets within the construction area.
