Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program

This program is intended to support a more structured and proactive approach to system flushing. The work will help SGWASA evaluate operational methods for improving water quality maintenance, managing sediment and residual conditions, and strengthening long-term distribution system practices.
Routine valve and fire hydrant maintenance was completed in June. Water main flushing was postponed due to high temperatures and localized drought conditions.

Throughout July 2026, SGWASA advanced engineering initiatives focused on water treatment, wastewater capacity, and infrastructure reliability. Engineering for the PFAS Advanced Water Treatment facility progressed toward the 90% design stage, while permitting coordination and corrosion-control planning continued. The AquaPRS pilot treatment unit was delivered to the water treatment plant on July 31 in preparation for expanded testing. Construction also moved forward under both packages of the I-85 Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project. Work included sewer installation along East Lyon Station and Joe Peed roads, construction at the Joe Peed and East Middleton Road pump stations, pipeline installation near Central Avenue and A Street, railroad-crossing preparation, and directional-bore activities beneath NC Highway 85. Engineering revisions were also developed near Eighth and D streets to address conflicts involving rock excavation, an existing gas line, and an existing water line.
The Creedmoor water meter replacement program reached approximately 70% completion, supporting improved accuracy and system modernization. Final draft reports for the water and wastewater infrastructure assessments were reviewed, advancing long-term asset management and infrastructure planning. Completed water treatment plant filter improvements continued to demonstrate longer operating cycles, lower turbidity, reduced chemical use, and improved treatment reliability. Water-quality engineering also progressed through hydraulic modeling, booster pump station assessments, flushing-program development, and distribution-control evaluations. Although unidirectional flushing remained postponed due to weather and drought conditions, July rainfall and improved Lake Holt levels supported tentative scheduling for the program. Engineering design for the water treatment plant valve replacement project remained complete, and broader inspections conducted through the Water Treatment Plant Master Plan continued to inform the condition assessment of critical infrastructure.
