PFAS Pilot Phase 1 completed; Phase 2 underway
The State Water Infrastructure Authority approved more than $10.6 million in new funding to support SGWASA’s PFAS treatment program. The project remains on schedule, with engineering design underway and Phase 2 pilot testing progressing. The formal funding structure will be finalized upon receipt of the Letter of Intent to Fund from NCDEQ.

This program is SGWASA’s multi-year regulatory and treatment response to PFAS compounds detected in source water.
The EPA finalized enforceable standards for six PFAS compounds in April 2024 and established compliance deadlines that require monitoring, corrective action where needed, and public notification. In response, SGWASA has developed a phased mitigation strategy that includes pilot testing, engineering design, and long-range treatment planning.
The project has advanced through the first pilot phase, completed in December 2025, with the final report delivered in January 2026. A second pilot phase was later approved and funded, and staff recently received final approval from NCDEQ for its scope and schedule. The project is transitioning from preliminary testing into the next round of active evaluation needed to support treatment selection and implementation planning.

PFAS Executive Summary
Final PFAS Mitigation Report From CDM Smith
An ATSDR report, also known as a Public Health Assessment or Health Consultation, is a report by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry summarizing an investigation of environmental contaminants and their potential health effects on a specific community.
The report provides information on health data, environmental data, and ATSDR's conclusions about the likelihood of harm to human health from exposure to site-related contaminants.
